Everything comes back around. Neil Patrick Harris said he was sorry after a controversial photo from a Halloween party in 2011 got a lot of attention.
Harris, 48, told Entertainment Weekly on Monday, May 16, that a photo from a Halloween party she and her husband threw 11 years ago has been found. “It was a shame then, and it’s still a shame now. Amy Winehouse was a once-in-a-generation artist, and I’m sorry if this picture hurt anyone.”
This month, the photo that had been found again went viral on social media. It shows a meat platter that looks like the late singer Amy Winehouse. “I can’t believe how many very online people over the age of 25 are just now finding out about Neil Patrick Harris’ disgusting Amy Winehouse cake,” writer Ashley Reed tweeted on May 13, implying that the incident made her feel very differently about the actor.
In July 2011, the “Rehab” singer died of alcohol poisoning at age 27. This was three months before the How I Met Your Mother alum and his husband, David Burtka, threw a Halloween party. The actor Justin Mikita, married to Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, was the first to post a picture of the charcuterie board on Twitter. “Take a look at who showed up last night at @ActuallyNPH and @GourmetMD’s Halloween party. Looking good,” Mikita, now 36, wrote in 2011.
A small sign next to the platter in the picture says “The Corpse of Amy Winehouse” and lists the kinds of meat on the plate: “Spicy BBQ sauce with beef ribs, pulled pork, and chicken sausage.”
The photo’s return caused a lot of anger. “It’s long past time for people to talk about how Amy Winehouse was treated by the sexist and racist celebrity media machine. And the people who were forced to watch it in the early 2000s and early 2010s. “Neil Patrick Harris’ messed-up corpse cake is just the tip of the iceberg,” said one Twitter user. While others were shocked by the “graphic” and “inappropriate” image.
Even though the photo has been dug up more than once, Harris hadn’t publicly discussed the controversy until now. Since 2014, the Emmy winner has been married to Burtka, 46 years old. They have twins, Harper and Gideon, who are 11 years old.
“[Having kids] is a lot harder for gay men, but we tried!” Burtka made a joke about it on The Wendy Williams Show in 2015, saying that “two different women” were involved. “There was a wonderful woman who gave eggs but didn’t want to be known. We put two of our best guys into her eggs, but they were different eggs.”
The professional chef told Wendy Williams that he thinks Harper might be his biological daughter. And that Gideon is more like Harris. He said this about their daughter. “Gideon is a little bit smarter and headier.” She says, “Hey, everyone! I’m here!”
